Green hydrogen

Green hydrogen can be used directly in heavy industries such as steel or cement production. Here, hydrogen can replace fossil fuels, including industrial process heat.

E-methanol

E-methanol is the product of a chemical process based on green hydrogen and biogenic CO2.In the process, biogenic CO2 is used and captured from existing CO2 sources.

Green ammonia

Green ammonia is the product of a chemical process based on green hydrogen and nitrogen, with nitrogen being directly captured from the air.

Power-to-Heat

solutions help connect the power grid to central heating systems. These solutions can help reduce use of fossil fuels while making use of excess generation capacity

Power-to-Gas

Solutions are especially useful in the transportation infrastructure.

Power-to-Liquid

Technologies offer drop-in replacements for fossil fuels that are compatible with the existing infrastructure.

How it works

The science that makes wind into fuel and fertiliser

Many areas of industry and most forms of heavy transport, such as long-distance ships and airplanes, are hard to power directly with electricity. So, how can we use electricity to power them in a different way?

Power-to-X means using renewable electricity, for example wind power, to create something else (‘X’). The ‘X’ created is an energy carrier – usually renewable hydrogen – which can power medium- to heavy-duty transport or be used in industry.

Renewable hydrogen, or green hydrogen, can in turn be synthesised into other green fuels, such as e-methanol for shipping, e-kerosene for aviation, and e-ammonia for industrial use in fertilisers or as a shipping fuel. We also call these electro-fuels, or e-fuels.

The scientific process used to create green hydrogen is electrolysis. In other words, green electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Power-to-X Benefits

Power-to-X (PtX) is a blanket term that covers technologies that produce fuels, chemicals and materials based on green hydrogen produced through electrolysis. PtX fuels have a significant role to play in the green transformation of the transport and industry sectors, where electrification may be too expensive or impractical. It has been assessed that PtX can become an essential part of Denmark’s future energy system. In addition, Denmark has great export and business potential within PtX.
